Dear my fellow readers,

This is my 100th post on the “House of Huy” blog. I cannot believe that it has reached this far. I am so happy. 100 is an important landmark that, to me, I haven’t thought about that from the beginning. I started this blog in September 2022. At first, I only did this blog for my class requirement. So, one of our assignments was starting a blog because it is another form of journalism. We had to have at least ten posts for our blog. I didn’t take it seriously in doing this. But then, I realized that I loved doing so much and decided to continue to develop it into a more extensive blog with many different categories, diverse posts, and exciting stories. Of course, not many of them are interesting. The question is, “Why do I continue to do this blog?” There are three reasons. I love to write because I am in journalism major. I want to practice writing skills. And you are my primary support. Because of the third reason, I would like to take this opportunity to express my dedication and my appreciation to everyone who reads my blog.

If you have followed my blog from the beginning, you must have known the first name of this blog was “May I Talk A Little Bit?” The name told about the primary purpose of this blog. It is all about talking. I love writing opinions because when I saw or read something, I often come up with an idea to write about it or bring the stories with people around me. But not everyone knew what I was talking about because they didn’t read the news. It’s pretty sad. Whenever I met someone with the same frequency as me, it was like I had won a jackpot. I can discuss a topic with them for hours without feeling bored. To me, opinion is always an important element in journalism because it can help journalists express their feelings, points of view, and thoughts on something. In every newspaper, there is an opinion section where besides journalists, the readers can send their pieces to the editors. At first, my blog is only about opinions. But then, I decided to expand the category to talk about. My life, movie, column, and fashion (this one had been canceled for a while because I know nothing about fashion even though I read Vogue every time.)

As I shared above, my blog, at first, was for my class only, so it did not update daily. I only did it whenever I wanted to post or if I came up with a good story idea to develop it. But then, I started to fall in love with writing a blog even though I had not done it or thought of doing it before. I have written daily since then. It is like a newspaper that publishes daily. Some of my posts may have gone against your perspectives. I agree because I believe everyone has their voice, and we’re free to talk, express, and write whatever we think about in life as long as we don’t offend others. I share my opinion on an essential and viral topic relating to our daily life. I criticize, support, or even don’t give a damn at all.

I remember I used to watch a movie called “The Naked City,” which was a film-noir. At the movie’s end, Lt. Dan Muldoon (played by Barry Fitzgerald said, “There are 8 million stories in the naked city. This has been one of them.” The naked city here in New York. Only New York has 8 million stories or more than that to talk about. I think there are so many things to say, but I keep two things in my mind when I select what to write. One is that it must relate to our daily life. Two is that it must be on trend. I expanded the topics to politics, movies, and social issues.

With politics, I am not shy away from sharing that I am a Democrat. But it’s not because of that I will only support my political view by saying nice things about the Democratic and criticizing the Republicans. As a journalist, I understand that I must not be biased. I must stay neutral all the time. One of the good things that my mom taught me is that whenever I hear something, I ought to listen with both ears. She is right. In this chaotic world, finding yourself a side to stand on and support is crucial. I am standing at the crossroad and telling a story based on my observations. Same thing with politics. I wrote about Trump but didn’t always talk badly about him. There are a few good things that Trump did. To do it, I must read and watch Fox News to find out what good things they are talking about Trump. That’s how journalism works. Stay neutral.

With movies, I am a movie lover. When I decide to write movie reviews, I will watch that movie a day before and try to come up with some ideas. To do it, I must watch or rewatch a scene repeatedly to find something interesting to talk and from that, I can relate that movie to life.

With social issues, I usually read news from the Washington Post, the Orange County Register, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Truth Social, Vogue, or gossip from people around me. I love gossip so much because, in a million gossip, there is probably only one correct story. But everyone still loves listening to gossip despite its credibility of it. However, the fun part of doing a story based on gossip is that I can dig deeper into it to find a way to tell aside. Social issues usually start from gossip (If you watch Gossip Girl, you will understand why.)

One hundred posts with so many things to tell, express, and share. Reaching this far, I’d like to thank my fellow readers because you are my primary motivation for continuing my work. Changing from “May I Talk A Little Bit?” to “House of Huy” is a big transition for me. It was no longer about “a little bit.” It is about a house of words where Huy can talk about whatever he wants to satisfy himself and his fellow readers, just like a new slogan says. “Just a place to satisfy my writing.”

Thank you, and see you in the following posts.

Sincerely,

Huy Nguyen.
