Today, when I was scrolling through my Facebook, there is a quote that I absolutely love, and it keeps reminding me about people nowadays when they act, behave, and lie or speak the truth. “There is Truth in Wine and Children” by Plato. Plato was a famous philosopher in Athen, Greece. He was a student of Socrates, an ancient philosopher. I used to write a blog about one of his works before. He founded the Academy, an academic program many consider the first Western university. Plato wrote many philosophical texts, at least 25. He dedicated his life to learning and teaching and is hailed as one of the founders of Western philosophy. Plato also contributed to numerous philosophical subfields, including ethics, cosmology, and metaphysics. Plato was famous for his Allegory of the Cave, which told about prisoners in a cave who could only see their shadows on a wall without knowing what it was. As a philosopher, Plato always said the right things about life; this quote is no exception.

When I read this quote for the first time, I find out that this is such a reasonable quote, and it is true about how people live today. “There is Truth in Wine and Children.” Truth is sometimes inconvenient and hard to accept, but it is the truth. Whether people accept it or not, the truth will always exist, and we must live with it. Returning to the quote, I think that when people have a drunken feast inside their bodies, for some reason, they start to speak out all the things that had happened in the past, even the worst things or their lies or their deepest secrets they hid for a long and now they tell the truth like a confession. I also think this quote suggests that a person with a drunken feast inside will raise their tension to speak their pressing thoughts about others and desires. With the children people often say that children never lie because they will say what they see without thinking about it. They are still childish, and they don’t understand anything about life. So, when adults ask them something, they will answer precisely like they see or think.
In this quote, “There is Truth in Wine and Children,” when I read, I am confused that there is truth in wine; people drink much wine. Therefore, they speak the truth by drinking wine. Not always do they drink wine; they are drunk, and they speak the truth. There is no proof of that. For example, sometimes drunk people don’t speak the truth, they speak more lies, and they even have a little violence inside them, and if someone disagrees with them, which will impulse them, that person will fight back. On the other hand, when drunk people start talking, nobody believes whatever they say because they believe that was only a joke. The conclusion of this quote is still ambiguous because there are no pieces of evidence to show that truth can be inside the wine.
In my experience, I used to see my friend confess the truth when he was drunk, as this quote said. About five years ago, I attended my friend’s birthday party. The party was fun, and in the end, everyone was drunk except me. My friend was so wasted that he started to say bad things, which made some people annoyed or some people feel fun. But at a point, my friend started to speak out the truth he had hidden for a long time. He told everyone that he was cheating on his wife. Everyone was in shock after his confession, especially his wife. His voice was weak, drunk, and angry. She was very desperate after what my friend said. He continued that he had been cheating on her for six months, and the reason he did that was that he was sick of his wife; she always complained about everything, and him jealous of what she had, with her job, with her wealthy family meanwhile he was just a regular employee. He was so wasted that he could not control his behavior or actions. The truth that he had hidden for a long now was revealed, but that truth was so dark, so dirty, and nobody like that. After what he said, I thought he was selfish when he did not share anything with his wife, and he was so cowardly when he cheated on her. A few months later, the consequence was the divorce paper. “There is Truth in Wine and Children” can be in this situation.
When I read this quote, I agreed and disagreed with what Plato said. I agree because, based on what I saw, a drunk feast impacts their body and mind when people get drunk. They can not control both, and for some reason, they will speak out the truth without thinking. They express the truth with emotion and how they feel about that. The children are too young to understand what is happening around them. They speak what they think or they see. No one will think that is a lie and adults even agree with everything they said. However, I’m afraid I have to disagree because wine can make people turn worse. They cannot control their minds and their behaviors. There will not always have truth in wine; sometimes, that is violence. We don’t know what they will do when they are drunk. And not every child nowadays says the truth. They tell lies that we don’t know. So we cannot be sure that they speak the truth.
In conclusion, whether you believe in this quote or not, wine helps people to entertain not help you to do spectacular things. Even when you are not drunk, you have a secret you have hidden for a long time. Just speak out because someone will listen to you and advise you on what to do. You cannot keep it until the secret becomes a weapon and kills you inside.
