I want to invite you back to the 19th century in the South America where it had many cotton fields, lands, farms, and this was the time America just got out of the Civil War. And I would like to welcome you to visit the O’Hara family and meet Scarlett O’Hara, an extraordinary woman who had been through rich then poverty and got back up where she fell. By this time, you might have guessed what movie I am talk about right? It is Gone With The Wind.

Source: IMDb
The movie was released in 1939, directed by Victor Fleming, based on the novel by Margaret Mitchell. “Gone With the Wind” is still considered as one of the hight grossing films in the history. Until today, “Gone With The Wind” is still a topic that people keep talking about. Both in culture and art. But because both topics are too large for me to include in this reveal, I would like to talk about what elements make me love this movie.
The Story
Gone With The Wind has a running time of three hours. If it was released today, probably this movie would have been streamed on Netflix or other platforms. It is about youth, war, love, lost, sacrifice, family, and kindness of every character in this movie. From the beginning, it has a bright color of innocence of youth where girls were dreamers and boys were adventurists. They didn’t know what was waiting in front of them. The Civil War had broken out, many men went to the battle field and many of them didn’t return. At home, women had to take care of the families. It was a difficult time and it was more difficult after the South lost the war. But one thing running through the movie is love. Yes, only love can resolve every problem in this movie. It is the love from Scarlett O’Hara to people around her, it is the love from every Black people to each other, it is the love to their country, it is the love of each couple for each other, it is the love for their lives.
Scarlett O'Hara: The Outstanding Character Development
Scarlett O’Hara is such an inspiration for everyone. Including me. She is beautiful, elegant, arrogant but having a big heart. She is a type of person who would like to do everything like she wants. She doesn’t care about what people think and how they are gonna judge her. She is a strong independent woman who never gives up in front of any circumstance. After the war, she fell into a difficult life. Her struggle to take care of Tara is more challenging than she had expected. But fate always jeopardizes with her. She cannot have the love with the man she has a crush on and painfully sees him marrying her cousin. Tara is in the danger of being taken away and she has to do whatever it takes to keep Tara because it is her family’s legacy. When she has her new love, Rhett Butler, she cannot keep him with her forever. What a miserable life! But here is the thing, Scarlett O’Hara is never conquered in front of life. She is trying to survive then, she can live. It would have been so great if Scarlett O’Hara was real. Whenever I feel down in life or find no hope, I’ll turn to her to get inspired. Here is one of her quotes that I love the most. “As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again. No, nor any of my folk.” It shows that O’Hara shall never stop and continues to fight until her last breath for people around her.
The Movie Itself
Making a movie in 1939 was not an easy job and this movie is 3 hours long. It is like a mission: impossible. But the director has focused the production design, musical score , editing, and cinematography to portrayed the harshness and the intense of the South after war. The cast was superb and well-casted.
Gone With The Wind is such a masterpiece of cinema. Despite its controversies, this movie has brought the audience the best experience ever. They can see themselves in each character. It is such a great movie. Highly recommended.
