Do you have social media? Do you use it every day? What do you do on social media? I can answer for you the first two questions. But the third one depends on you. I am on Facebook and Instagram everyday whenever I have free time. Like I shared with you in the previous post that I don’t have TikTok because I found it is the most toxic social media platform ever. I have been thinking about this platform for the last few weeks, and I realized that it is the fastest way to make a person famous and infamous. It is amazing, isn’t it? No, it’s not. It goes against everything to measure the famous level.

I believe in order to be famous, there are three ways. One is showing your talent. Whether you are good at singing, acting, or creating things, you can use that talent to build your reputation by attending a singing contest, auditioning for a movie, or starting a company and be famous. Of course, in this way, the road to reach your popularity is longer. But all the famous people were doing the same things in the past, and they were successful. Two is creating scandals. People love scandals. That’s for sure. The famous example we can mention immediately is the Kardashians. Admit it, they don’t have any talent at all like the late Barbara Walter used to say. The Kardashians became famous because of Kim’s sex tape. Then, they had their own TV show and became famous. Scandals can destroy a person or boost them up if they know how to use a scandal. And three is social media, which is a new thing. I want to mention two social media platforms that make people famous. TikTok and YouTube.

I don’t use TikTok but I sometimes watch some TikTok videos that are posted on Facebook or Instagram. I can see one thing that the platform has “saved” the life of so many people. I mean that a normal person who loves dancing can create a short video of them dancing. Immediately, it can go viral and everyone else start to cover that dance. Or they can use TikTok as a platform to promote a product, to share their life stories, or attack other people. There is no restriction on TikTok. Whoever uses TikTok is obsessed with it. Soon, the influence of every famous TikToker is much bigger than a celebrity. They can gain more followers, more views, and more money from their TikTok account.

But the question is, “Is it a long term?” It is very difficult to say. TikTok is like Facebook, Instagram, My Space, or Yahoo. They were all one time famous and popular. They gained millions of users every day. But look at today. Yahoo. Gone. My Space. Gone. Facebook. Not as popular as it was. Instagram. Still popular, but who knows? The same with TikTok. No one can predict what will happen to TikTok in the future. Especially in a world full of AI, there is no guarantee that one thing can stay popular forever. TikTok may be dethroned by another popular platform. Look at Twitter. After Elon Musk bought it, Twitter became more controversial than ever. Now, Threads, a platform by Meta, is gaining millions of users from the day it was first introduced. See? Nothing is sure. TikTokers can be super famous, and because of that, many people on that platform is having an illusion about their influence and their roles. That’s interesting! I will discuss it later in a post. But I am saying that yes, TikTok can make you famous after one night and also strip you of the night later.

YouTube is my favorite one. Once you create an account, you have your channel. YouTube is also the fastest way to make you famous. A lot of channels on YouTube, and not many of them are good. One thing that I like about YouTube is its diversity in content. Music, movies, vlogs, shows, games, sports. Anything. Only you have an idea and a vision for your channel, you can gain views and subscribers. It is a good place to build your reputation and your popularity. YouTube knew how to select content for its platform. Whatever channel contains sensitive content or violates copyrights, it will be immediately removed from YouTube. You can make money from YouTube. But YouTube can also be a knife that kills a person’s popularity in a snap. Same as TikTok.

I have gone through two popular platforms. You see, those two have made many people famous. The measure of famous is not through talent or hard work anymore. It is from the number of followers on social media. More followers, the more popular you can be. A cliché, isn’t it? But what else can we do right now? It is what it is. We have to accept it whether we like it or not.
