Don’t Worry Darling worries you.

There are many negative comments, criticisms, and drama around Don’t Worry Darling by Olivia Wilde. Even if it is true that the movie used all the drama to PR, bravo to this movie because it got my attention and dragged me to the theater to watch it. Don’t Worry Darling, in my opinion, can be considered one of the best movies in 2022. It had a good story plot, a promising cast, and a terrific plot twist.

Don’t Worry Darling is a mystery/drama. When the audience first watched the trailer, they could know what kind of movie it was. In a suburban in the 1950s, wives stayed home and cared for their families while the husbands went to work. In this movie, nobody knew what the husbands were working on and where they worked. All they could see was that they drove to a building in the middle of the desert, and that was it. At home, the wives did things that all the women loved—cleaning the house, cooking, chatting with other women in the neighborhood, shopping with their husband’s money, and dancing ballet. In that suburban, from men to women, they all love and worship one man, who in their eyes was so perfect, lovely, and sacred. Everything coming from his mouth immediately made everyone believe in him like a preacher talking to his followers. But things in that suburban were so bizarre and so mysterious. All the women were pre-programmed to do all those things repeatedly.

Until one day, a dam was broken, and just like that, the veil of mystery began to reveal itself. The audience would keep questioning WTF is happening in that place. Are they ok at all? That is what I like the most about this movie. It would let people keep being curious, and when they are still struggling to find out, the film will bring you an unexpected plot twist that jeopardizes your mind in a tick. I, personally, could never see it coming. And once the plot twist happened, the rest of the movie was about how each character would deal with their problems.

A movie about feminism

Society in the 20th century was not for women. They fought hard to have the rights of men. Even though they had what they wanted, somewhere out there, the role of women in society is still being underestimated. Don’t Worry Darling brought up that topic. There is no denying that this movie has the vibe of “The Stepford Wives.” It was a movie about women who became slaves to their husbands. The film was crazy. But overall, I want to say that when you watch Don’t Worry Darling, you will see a different picture. It worries you a certain way, and I am about to tell you now. You see, when I said the role of women somehow is still being underestimated, it means there is a system in that men are jealous of women; husbands envy their wives because wives are better than them; they make more money than them; they achieve more than them, and they can do things that men cannot do. As a man, they must be agitated. Don’t Worry Darling draws a picture that tells you about a society with no race barrier in which all races are equal. But it is the barrier of the sexes, where women must always submit to their men. All the women in Don’t Worry Darling do the same thing every day until one woman breaks the fourth wall and finds out something’s not happening right in their lives. She asked why they were there. That moment marks the beginning of the rise of women. The barrier is finally about to break.

But one of them chooses the life of being a good wife.

If Alice is the main character that the movie focuses on, Bunny will be the one we need to worry about once the mystery is revealed. She chooses to be a good wife to her husband and live like that forever after a tragedy strikes her. She is ready to exchange her previous life for a new life. Throughout the movie, we can see that Alice is trying to warn Bunny that something strange is happening, but Bunny doesn’t care. She just wants to live normally. How she reacts to what Alice says can tell us that Bunny knows something but doesn’t want to say it. Bunny represents a group of women who wants to live like a woman, which means they don’t need to worry about things out there, only focuses on housework, and be loyal to their husband. With them, it is happiness. There is no prejudice. But it worries because they let their husband steps on their head and become their master. Soon, they will control their wives and make them be obeyed. That is not life or happiness. I don’t know what Bunny thinks about this life. But she is not living. She is hiding from reality and tragedy.

Conclusion

Don’t Worry Darling has a good story but a disappointing ending. But I love the movie because it contains a meaningful message about marriage and women. I have to watch this movie twice to understand what it is about. And Don’t Worry Darling is one of the best movies in 2022.
